Where to stay in New Orleans?

Hello I'm a touring companion visiting New Orleans soon and was hoping the locals might lend some location advice. I'm not looking for specific hotels, just areas that would be convienent and safe for my clients to visit me. This is my very first New Orleans visit, so I'd hate to stay in the wrong part and miss out on all the fun!
I will be driving, btw so like plenty of parking for me and my guests. ( I know in downtown DC most hotels are valet only, which can get very expensive!)

My guess is you already found a place to stay...PRISON!! Geez girl it's people like you who give this business a bad name. If anyone cares as to why I am so harsh, google kidnapping case in New Mexico. Her profiles have been pulled from every other board. SAD!
