I'm really behind on my reading...

This week, I came across an article that was published in Maclean's back in September 2009.

You're teaching our kids WHAT? - Maclean's Article

I'm glad I read it.

I was not surprised to learn about the outrage expressed by parents about what their children are being taught in sex education classes. I’m certain that this will never change.

I was glad to learn that someone realizes that teaching kids about sex from a negative reference point is not the best or the only way that sex education can be delivered. Educators have also realized that sex education is not just about basic biology.

I found the point that sex education should “properly equip [kids] for the world they live in”, to be the most significant because kids are being exposed to endless streams of sexual imagery and information that beg for explanations.

Tell me your thoughts.

Joy,
Your Chocolate Dream

Joy,
While I am not sure what age our kids are ready to start their education, I agree that an open, honest approach leads to a healthier attitude. Sex, as we all know, is an integral part of our lives and removing the "dirty" connotation would do us ALL a lot of good.

Our kids, as well as we as adults, need to be able to make informed decisions about what we do and with whom. I know that I enjoyed "figuring it out as I went" in the back seat of the car or behind the bleachers at the football game but, we BOTH probably would have had more fun if we had had a little more information beforehand.

There is a LOT of sexual imagery in the television shows and even the movies our children see every day. Even the Disney movies have a lot more innuendo and flagrant sexuality than they did before. Or maybe I'm just more turned on by Fiona as an ogre than I should be. LOL

I don't want to push our kids into adulthood any faster. They have so little time as innocents as it is, but they shouldn't be thrown into the fray completely unprepared either.
